Despite the frosty and gloomy weather, there was a good long-distance view towards the West Harz from Brocken on 27.12.2014. In the center of the image are the Lerchenköpfe, on whose two peaks the radio towers of the Torfhaus transmitter are located. At the foot of the left transmitter is the small settlement of Torfhaus, which mainly serves as a recreational area and starting point for hikes. On the left in the foreground, the route of the Brocken Railway briefly appears between the trees, which has been leading to the Brocken summit since 1898.

The Querfurt Plateau is a cultural landscape strongly shaped by agriculture. The fertile soils here yield high harvests. With industrialization, lignite mining gained significant importance. However, the lignite power plant Schkopau visible in the background is now mainly supplied from the Profen open-cast mine near Zeitz, following the end of mining in the nearby Geiseltal open-cast mine. Meanwhile, numerous wind turbines also characterize the landscape. (near Langeneichstädt, 28.10.2014)
