West of Lysekil lies the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. The Bohuslän archipelago on the rugged Swedish west coast between Gothenburg and the Norwegian border is more pristine and wild than that of the Baltic Sea coast. It consists of torn and battered, partly polished granite blocks, often with very little soil and a few grasses in the hollows.

West of Lysekil lies the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. Skerries are a special feature of the Swedish coast. A skerry (from the Swedish skär ) is a small rocky island formed by the activity of the inland ice. Skerries usually appear in clusters ( skerry gardens ). They can range from a few square meters to several square kilometers in size and rarely rise more than 50 m above the sea.

Store Munkeviken in the nature reserve of Stångehuvud west of the town of Lysekil. The skerries were formed during the last Ice Age, when the Scandinavian ice sheet lay over them. The movement of the ice scraped off the underlying rocks, which is why the skerries have their typical rounded shape.

The coast in front of Hållö Klava on the Bohuslän archipelago coast. Skerries are small rocky islands located off the coast. They were formed during the Ice Age when glaciers moved over rocky landscapes and polished them. This is how the skerries acquired their typical rounded shape.

The gorge »Kungsklyftan« near Fjällbacka in western Sweden. For the filming of Ronja the Robber's Daughter, one of the later children's novels by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, the Kungsklyftan, which divides the local mountain Vetteberget into two uneven parts, was chosen as the filming location for the Wolf Gorge, the access to Mattis Castle. The film was shot in 1984, but the Kungsklyftan has hardly changed to this day.

Evening sky over Fjällbacka in western Sweden. The Hollywood icon Ingrid Bergman loved the area and enjoyed spending her summers with her family on the island of Dannholmen from 1958 onwards. She often came to Fjällbacka – for shopping and dining out.

The skerry Kleven is a small rocky island. Because of the idea of having a yard with islands in front of the mainland, this phenomenon is called skärgård in the North European languages (Swedish). The word component -gård ( yard ), which is related to the English word yard, was understood as garden in the German-speaking area. This led to the term archipelago garden.
