Until 1978, the Ellund Kirkevej connected Padborg in Denmark with Ellund in Schleswig-Holstein. However, the border crossing was closed when the highway from Hamburg to Kolding was built. Today, there is no longer a road, only a meadow. Photo taken: July 28, 2023.

In 1920, some Danish-minded farm owners north of the German village of Ellund managed to convince the then border commission that the border should be drawn south of the farms, so that the farms would lie in Denmark. Neither Denmark nor Germany agreed with this solution, but the local consensus prevailed over the international border commission. In the middle stand some trees that a Danish farmer wanted to bring onto his property. Photo: July 28, 2023.
