On the edge of the Fehmarn Belt between the island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland, about ten kilometers south of Nysted, lies the Rødsand I offshore wind farm. Here, on an area of 24 km², 72 wind turbines with a capacity of 166 MW are installed. The towers are 69 meters high, and each of the three rotor blades is 41 meters long. The foundation of each of these wind turbines alone weighs 1,800 tons, and the tower with the nacelle, generator, and rotor blades weighs another 250 tons. The construction of the wind farm cost approximately 213 million euros and was carried out between 2002 and 2004.

On May 14, 1963, the ferry port of Puttgarden, about 8 km away, was opened, from where ferries continue to Denmark. The Vogelfluglinie was completed and significantly eased train and car traffic. This anniversary "50 years of the Vogelfluglinie" was also celebrated with a special postage stamp and several events on Fehmarn.
