The brown coal excavators tirelessly carve through the landscape around the power plant in Weisweiler (left in the image) to feed it with coal. In the picture, you can clearly see the individual soil layers: at the top, the fertile light brown loess soil, below that a dark brown clay layer, lighter sand, and then the first brown coal layer. Seen on 09.08.2011 in the Rhenish brown coal mining area near Inden. There is a viewpoint there from which you can look into the huge pit where the brown coal is being mined.

A zucchini plant in the garden almost always yields a high harvest. From mid-July, you can harvest the cucumber-like fruits, which can grow up to 60 cm long and weigh 2-3 kg. Zucchini belongs to the gourd family and is a vitamin-rich vegetable. The delicious fruits can be used as vegetables, in soups, casseroles, cakes, or grilled.

My tomatoes are ripening (20.07.2011), they are currently my pride and joy in the garden. The plants are in the greenhouse and are now about 2.3m tall. It is so wonderful to watch how a small seed grows into a seedling and how these delicious fruits develop from the flowers.

The seed of a dandelion, loved by children as a blowball, not so welcome to me as a garden enthusiast. (At least not in my garden) Yet the plant is a versatile talent. The flowers of the common dandelion can be processed into a sweet syrup, the young leaves into salad. Even the roots of the plant were once used as a coffee substitute. In medicine, dandelion is used for loss of appetite, bloating, and to stimulate urine excretion. Today, research is being conducted to replace natural rubber from rubber trees with dandelion rubber.
