Arriving at Sägemühlenberg near the Oder Valley, I reach an area at its summit where an entire forest section has been clear-cut, likely because the trees were severely weakened by the recent long dry spells and drought phases of the last two summers, making them easy prey for bark beetles; shot taken on the morning of 19.08.2019... 

Since an entire section of forest has been cleared here on the Sägemühlenberg and is therefore missing, I find an excellent viewpoint here: In front of me in the valley lies the Odertal with the opposite mountains and their steep slopes, over which, to the right of the center of the image, the Braunlage Wurmberg with its new observation tower peeks out. You can also see how many trees on the slopes and ridges above the Odertal have already turned reddish-brown and are therefore dying, a catastrophe that spreads like a relentless and unstoppable wave from the core zone of the National Park from the Hohneklippen in the east across Königsberg, Achtermannshöhe, Bruchberg, between Torfhaus, Oderbrück, and Königskrug to the "Auf-dem-Acker" mountain, where hardly any healthy spruce forest remains. This large clearing in the forest near Braunlage was created first by a storm, then because numerous other trees had to be felled, which were damaged by this storm, weakened by last year's extremely dry climate, and then infested by bark beetles. Now flowers have taken over the area; meanwhile, there are numerous such clearings created by logging in the forest near Braunlage, due to the ongoing drought and bark beetle infestation, especially in northern Germany.
