Store Munkeviken in the Stångehuvud nature reserve west of the town of Lysekil. The archipelago was formed during the last Ice Age when the Scandinavian ice sheet covered the area. The movement of the ice scraped off the underlying rocks, which is why the typical rounded shape of the archipelago originates.

West of Lysekil lies the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. Skerries are a special feature of the Swedish coast. A skerry (from the Swedish "skär") is a small rocky island formed by the activity of the inland ice. Skerries usually appear in clusters ("skerry gardens"). They can range from a few square meters to several square kilometers in size and rarely rise more than 50 m above the sea.

West of Lysekil lies the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. The archipelago of Bohuslän on the rugged Swedish west coast between Gothenburg and the Norwegian border is more pristine and wild than that of the Baltic Sea coast. It consists of torn and battered, partly polished granite blocks, often with very little soil and a few grasses in the hollows.
