View of the island Grind in the Stockholm archipelago. Archipelagoes are called skär in Swedish and describe a cliff that juts out of the water. This can also be a smaller rocky islet or a rocky island in the sea. Many skär form a skärgård, which means archipelago. Due to the phonetic similarity and the romantic notion associated with a garden, gård – garden – was used. That is why in German it is now called Schärengarten (archipelago garden).
