The Folgefonna (also Folgefonni) is, with a total area of around 214 km², the third largest glacier in Norway after the Jostedalsbreen and the Svartisen. The glacier is divided into the northern Folgefonna (25 km²), the middle Folgefonna (9 km²), and the southern Folgefonna (180 km²), with the highest point at 1,662 m above sea level and the lowest at 400 m above sea level. The Folgefonna Glacier (Location: Hordaland - Norway) is not a remnant of the Ice Age. After the end of the last Ice Age, the ice retreated rapidly and the ice in the surrounding area completely melted away. It was only about 2,500 years ago that the northern part of the glacier (Nordre Folgefonna) reformed during a period of low temperatures and increased precipitation. With periodic variations, it had approximately the same extent as the current glacier. The other parts of the glacier have a parallel history.<br>Photo taken: July 6, 2018.
