Wildflower meadow in Bockelmanns Heide near Oberhaverbeck in August 2020. Another meadow of this kind can be found a few hundred meters further up at the forest edge, where it feels like being on an alpine pasture. In midsummer, the heathland truly presents itself in vibrant colors and holds many surprises.

Hike to the Wilseder Berg in September 2020. We are on the Machandelweg, about one kilometer from the destination. To the left, through the bushes, you can still see the sheepfold at Fürstengrab. Another hiking trail runs there, which also leads to the Wilseder Berg and further to Wilsede.

Blooming heath on the Machandelweg between Niederhaverbeck and Wilsede. In the hollow, a small retention pond of the Haverbeeke, which springs just a few meters from here. After a few kilometers, it flows into the still young Wümme at Schneverdinger Weg. The Machandelweg is one of many paths leading to the Wilseder Berg. Lüneburg Heath September 2020.

Hiking trail in the Vareler Heide near Scheeßel in the district of Rotenburg/Wümme. Around the Lüneburg Heath, some small heath areas have been preserved. In the past, the heath landscape extended over large areas of northern Germany. Even the rural culture has been preserved here, just as in the central heath. Thus, there are still thatched traditional houses and sheepfolds here, reaching as far as Sittensen deep into the district of Rotenburg. End of August 2020.

Hastedter Schnuckenheide, a historical document. It will probably never appear so romantic again. In 2020, it was overgrown with weeds and partially destroyed by the storm. Therefore, we fondly remember September 2014. At that time, the heathland in the Rotenburg district did not have to hide behind the nearby Lüneburg Heath.

In the foreground, rubble and debris, from which the Lüneburg Heath was formed during the Saale Ice Age. After the ice melted in a warmer period, sand and stone remained. To this day, only a thin layer of humus can be found in the nature reserve.
This provides just enough nutrients to sustain over 800 heath-like plants.
Except for a few raised bogs, water cannot remain on the surface, so it collects in lower-lying areas, forming spring pots. Thus, the heath is the birthplace of many small rivers, such as the Wümme, Haverbeeke, Fintau, Böhme, Veerse, Oste, and in the east the Schmale Aue and the Seeve, to name just a few. Besides the famous heathlands, the landscape consists of 60% forest; raised bogs as well as fields complete the picture. The stones in the foreground were removed from such a grain field; otherwise, machinery could not operate there. The latter areas are usually managed by the VNP (Nature Park Association). August 2020
