Foundation land Schäferhaus west of Flensburg - In 1998, the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation acquired the military training area from the federal government and leased it to the Bunde Wischen. The foundation land was named after the nearby actual Schäferhaus. To this day, the areas in the foundation land are maintained as naturally as possible, various animal and plant species are protected, and the land is managed with livestock. The Schäferhaus Foundation Land is a 292-hectare nature reserve west of Flensburg and formerly served as a military training area for the Bundeswehr. Since the mid-1990s, the area has been owned by the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation and has been designated as a nature reserve. This can be undertaken under the guidance of an experienced mudflat guide who is familiar with the particular dangers of the mudflats. There are mudflat hiking trails to or between some islands, which are sometimes marked with bush stakes and offer protection with rescue beacons in case hikers are caught by the tide. Mudflat guides are informed about the daily changing tides and the shifting course of the tidal channels and plan the hike accordingly.
