Harz, View into the Bode Valley (August 1989) 

Autumnal view from the riverbank below the Giebichenstein castle ruins through the Saale valley in Halle downstream to the Trotha dam. On the left is the district of Kröllwitz, on the right are the Klausberge, which represent a porphyry formation as a relic from long-past times of volcanic activity. There are beautiful hiking trails here, offering a magnificent view of the Saale valley and Giebichenstein Castle. Also located here is the "Jahn Cave," which the gymnastics pioneer Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852) used around 1800 as a hideout from the authorities; it is accessible via a separate access path and can be visited. 
