The spoil heaps of the former Saar mining industry have different characters. The spoil heap of the former Göttelborn mine today serves as a viewing mound with a view over the Saar coal forest. In the foreground lies the Weiher power plant of Steag, behind it the view extends all the way to the French border. 26.03.2017

Woodland near Nunkirchen/Saar, former forest, which has been returned to nature. Beautiful hiking trails run through the forest here; photo taken in the afternoon of 09.06.2013... Unfortunately, this area returned to nature no longer exists, as it has been sacrificed to the ever-expanding golf course, like so much landscape in this place, even though it is already one of the largest in all of Germany. Sadly, people here seem to have no awareness or appreciation for wild nature and biodiversity; maximum profit, maximum joy for golfers, and the aesthetics of the vast lawn monoculture with small groups of deciduous trees are obviously more important to them. What a pity!! And how sad in times of, for example, the enormous insect die-off...

The Saarland is worth a trip! Of course, also by train. Outside the industrial centers, picturesque villages and small towns invite you to visit. View from the pedestrian bridge over the Saar River towards Saarhölzbach. 04.08.2011

Sunset over the Saargau... 6 transmission masts of Europe 1, the French longwave transmitter (183 kHz), stand in Oberfelsberg. Here is one of the emergency masts (height 234 meters) at sunset. 12.09.2009 - Where the sun is just setting lies Thionville in Lorraine, and to the right on the horizon is the border with Luxembourg.
