Field clearance sale in Wintermoor/Heidekreis. Every year, a farmer plants these beautiful fields anew. You cut the cut flowers yourself and arrange your own colorful bouquet. The money for it is thrown into a covered wooden box that serves as the cash register. Photo taken in early August 2022

Eggersmühlen, that is the name of the old water mill, the buildings can be seen in the background. Here the Fintau is dammed up; it originates just a few kilometers from here near Reinsehlen in the Lüneburg Heath. From here it flows into the district of Rotenburg/Wümme, which begins just to the left behind the forest, all the way to Lauenbrück, where it merges with the Wümme. Late October 2020.

November 2010, yes, there used to be a few short winters. In recent years, the heath has remained green. So I am resorting to an old shot. The contrast to the heath bloom in summer. Reinsehlen near Schneverdingen.

In the foreground, rubble and debris, from which the Lüneburg Heath was formed during the Saale Ice Age. After the ice melted in a warmer period, sand and stone remained. To this day, only a thin layer of humus can be found in the nature reserve.
This provides just enough nutrients to sustain over 800 heath-like plants.
Except for a few raised bogs, water cannot remain on the surface, so it collects in lower-lying areas, forming spring pots. Thus, the heath is the birthplace of many small rivers, such as the Wümme, Haverbeeke, Fintau, Böhme, Veerse, Oste, and in the east the Schmale Aue and the Seeve, to name just a few. Besides the famous heathlands, the landscape consists of 60% forest; raised bogs as well as fields complete the picture. The stones in the foreground were removed from such a grain field; otherwise, machinery could not operate there. The latter areas are usually managed by the VNP (Nature Park Association). August 2020

October 14, 2019:
At the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, near the town of Schneverdingen, lies the Pietzmoor. Until about the mid-20th century, peat was extracted here and the moor was drained as a result. Since the mid-1980s, successful rewetting measures have been carried out and the peat pits are filling with water again.
