Pechölstein (also called pitch stones, pitch smear stones, or grease smear stones.) Since ancient times, pitch oil was burned on such stones in the Mühlviertel region. Resin-rich growths from pines, known as pine galls, as well as core pieces of rootstocks and crushed resin-rich pine wood were used for this purpose. These wood pieces were stacked pyramidally in the manner of a charcoal kiln, with the larger pieces at the bottom and the smaller ones on top. The carefully constructed kiln was then covered with spruce branches and sealed with turf pieces and soil. Bad Zell 041024 
