Blooming heath on the Machandelweg between Niederhaverbeck and Wilsede. In the hollow, a small retention pond of the Haverbeeke, which springs just a few meters from here. After a few kilometers, it flows into the still young Wümme at Schneverdinger Weg. The Machandelweg is one of many paths leading to the Wilseder Berg. Lüneburg Heath September 2020.

Wildflower meadow in Bockelmanns Heide near Oberhaverbeck in August 2020. Another meadow of this kind can be found a few hundred meters further up at the forest edge, where it feels like being on an alpine pasture. In midsummer, the heathland truly presents itself in vibrant colors and holds many surprises.

The Jezioro Łebsko (German Lebasee). The lake was the subject of a failed project starting in 1776. The goal was to lower the water level of Lake Leba and thereby facilitate the drainage of the surrounding swamps. For this purpose, the Prussian authorities had a canal dug from Lake Leba to the Baltic Sea, approximately in the middle of the spit.
The canal was used as a seaport for shipping from 1777. However, it soon became apparent that during storms, water from the Baltic Sea was pushed into the canal and thus into Lake Leba, causing the water level of Lake Leba to rise and resulting in flooding.
During a storm in 1779, the canal structure was destroyed, and there was a risk that the breach would widen and that Lake Leba could become a bay of the Baltic Sea. Therefore, the canal was closed again in 1783, and the old outflow of the Leba from Lake Leba was cleaned and restored.
Photo taken: August 17, 2020.
