Flug am 28.01.2008 am Ätna vorbei vom Südosten in Richtung Nordwesten, ganz links ist die Strasse zum Touristen-Punkt Ätna-Süd erkennbar, im Winter Skisport-Gebiet mit zwei Liften, die schon ein paar mal bei Ausbrüchen zerstört wurden. Über dem Steilhang sind kleinere Krater erkennbar, auch ganz links, wie sie auf den ganzen Ätna-Masiv zu finden sind, die meisten in ca. 1800 m Höhe.

Gleich kommt der Hauptgipfel in Sicht, hier war vermutlich der letzte kleine Ausbruch etwa vor einen Jahr, deswegen bleibt keine Schnee liegen, die vollständige Abkühlung der Lava dauert bis zu fünf Jahre.

In this photo, you can see that there is a second crater to the left behind the main crater; it was the main crater until 1964, and the new one only formed that year during an eruption.

Only in this photo can you see that just behind the main crater there is another crater that is smoking, or rather "steaming," because it looks more like water vapor from the snow. Take care, Etna, and stay peaceful, as you have caused quite a bit of trouble in the past.

Along the waterfront promenade between Château de Chillon and Villeneuve, water drains can be found repeatedly in the low stone walls. One such hole inspired me to take this photo across Lake Geneva towards the Grammont.
