In northwestern Wyoming lies Yellowstone National Park. It is the oldest national park on Earth. It was placed under nature protection as early as 1872. With an area of 8,987 km², it is also one of the largest national parks. It received its name from the yellow rock found in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Since 1978, it has also been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. The image shows the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs, which can be explored via wooden boardwalks. We did this on our USA trip on July 18, 2006.
