The Saltstraumen is the largest and most powerful tidal current on Earth. It exchanges the water of the Skjerstad and Saltdal fjords during the tidal difference between ebb and flow. It is said that 372 million cubic meters of water are pressed through the three-kilometer-long, 150 m wide, and 31 m deep strait every six hours. The speed reaches 22 knots – almost 40 km/h.
