The Gole dell’Alcantara are gorges along the Alcantara River in Sicily. The walls consist of basaltic lava, which is low in silicon and rich in iron, magnesium, and calcium. A slowly cooling lava flow allowed the formation of prismatic, pentagonal, and hexagonal columns. Photo taken July 2013.
