It is May 7, 2011, the Perlenbach, which carries so little water here, is actually quite a rushing mountain stream at this time of year on the western edge of the German Eifel near Kalterherberg. 

The seed of a dandelion, loved by children as a blowball, not so welcome to me as a garden enthusiast. (At least not in my garden) Yet the plant is a versatile talent. The flowers of the common dandelion can be processed into a sweet syrup, the young leaves into salad. Even the roots of the plant were once used as a coffee substitute. In medicine, dandelion is used for loss of appetite, bloating, and to stimulate urine excretion. Today, research is being conducted to replace natural rubber from rubber trees with dandelion rubber. 
