Land of the "open distances"; the forest on the edge of the national park trail between Silberteich and Hahnenkleeklippen, formerly a monotonous spruce plantation, has completely restructured since the founding of the national park in the 1990s. From the once dense spruce monocultures, only a few gnarled trees remain here, along with numerous deciduous trees, between which the view can wander all the way to the mountains of the southern Harz; photo taken in the late afternoon of 15.11.2018 

NATURAL MONUMENT BASALT QUARRY "STEIN" NEAR EITORF/SIEG This basalt crater is 19 million years old, covering an area of 0.1 sq km with column heights of 15-20 meters... At the information board, you stand directly on the vent of the dormant but not extinct volcano... The predominantly 5/6-sided basalt columns were quarried from the 1920s until 1967... a fascinating place, on 8.11.2018 

IN THE BASALT CRATER "BLAUER STEIN" NEAR KUCHHAUSEN/WESTERWALD Just a few hundred meters above the small Westerwald village of KUCHHAUSEN, the last residence of the world-famous photographer AUGUST SANDER known for his photographic work, lies in a forest area the approximately 100-meter-long oval basalt formation "BLAUER STEIN," where in the NEOZOIC, 5-25 million years ago, lava rose through a vent in the bedrock and solidified into angular columns.... Until the 1920s, basalt was quarried here by the LINZER BASALT-AG, today it is a fascinating place... on 4.11.2018 
