Around 1200, a pond was created in Altenburg for water supply, which was divided into the large and small pond around 1600. The island was created around 1720 and served as a retreat for the duke. The first zoo animal keeping took place at the beginning of the 20th century. Finally, the island zoo was opened in 1954. (24.06.2016)
