White daffodil (Narcissus poeticus) in Emil Nolde's garden. Wherever the painter settled, he created flower gardens. Also at his residence in Seebüll in North Frisia. The colors of the flowers attracted me irresistibly, Emil Nolde noted in his biography. Even today, the garden is laid out and maintained as it was during Nolde's lifetime, blooming through all the seasons. Photo: May 2007.

Tulips in Emil Nolde's garden at Seebüll in North Frisia. Photo: May 2007. On preserved sketches, Nolde gave indications for the planting of the garden. The garden developed into a magnificent flower garden until his death, which his gardener Thomas Börnsen cared for until 1976. He was also the one who left a planting plan that still makes it possible today to maintain Nolde's private retirement home in his spirit.

Daffodils (Narcissus) in Emil Nolde's garden at Seebühl in North Frisia. Photo: May 2007. Nolde's garden artwork represents a piece of shaped nature that itself appears like a large painting.
