This large clearing in the forest near Braunlage was created first by a storm, then because numerous other trees had to be felled, which were damaged by this storm, weakened by last year's extremely dry climate, and then infested by bark beetles. Now flowers have taken over the area; meanwhile, there are numerous such clearings created by logging in the forest near Braunlage, due to the ongoing drought and bark beetle infestation, especially in northern Germany. Land of the "open distances"; the forest on the edge of the national park trail between Silberteich and Hahnenkleeklippen, formerly a monotonous spruce plantation, has completely restructured since the founding of the national park in the 1990s.
