Probably one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world. At the southernmost tip of the African continent, on the dangerous Cape Agulhas coastline, stands the lighthouse modeled after the Pharaoh of Alexandria. Construction began on April 1, 1847, and was completed in December 1848. Initially equipped with a light strength of 4,500 candles, the beam shone out over the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. In 1914, an optical rotating light with an intensity of 470,000 candles was put into use, flashing every 4 seconds. Finally, in 1936, an electric light with an intensity of 12,000,000 candles was installed in the tower. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was not used for over 26 years until, in 1973, this beautiful historic building was declared a protected monument. In the meantime, the tower was renovated, a museum was opened, and since March 1988, the light beam has once again shone over both oceans. It is here, and not at Cape Point near Cape Town, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. This image makes a great background on the monitor.
