Cloud wisps in the February sky. I was able to take this shot on the afternoon of 11.02.2014 from the balcony of my apartment in Leverkusen-Schlebusch. Admittedly, not exactly a landscape photo, but this mood impressed me so much that I definitely wanted to present it here!

Durchzug einer Gewitterfront am 30.08.2012 über dem Elbtal bei Bad Schandau, Bild 6: Nachdem sich das Unwetter verzogen hatte, konnte ich infolge desselben die schon so oft gesehene Felsformation Lokomotive in der Nähe des Kurortes Rathen, tatsächlich das erste Mal dampfen sehen!! ;-)

Passage of a thunderstorm front on 30.08.2012 over the Elbe Valley near Bad Schandau, image 5: Here the storm cell has already crossed the Elbe and is moving eastward towards the Zittau Mountains. The extremely low-hanging and swirling cloud fragments are very clearly visible here!

Passage of a thunderstorm front on 30.08.2012 over the Elbe valley near Bad Schandau, image 4: Here the monster is just crossing the Elbe. Fortunately, the town of Bad Schandau only experienced a few strong gusts of wind and some rain! It looked worse a bit further north, from Königstein downstream along the Elbe! As I could see on the way back, branches and in some places entire trees had broken off here!

The entire formation rotated clearly counterclockwise, and the wisps of clouds rising behind the mountain on the left of the image took only a few seconds to reach the cloud base! In the far right background, the heavy rain/hail area can be seen. I believe this sight would have thrilled any storm chaser ! Until now, I had only seen such images on TV reports from the USA! As I later learned, the same storm cell even produced a tornado over the Zittau Mountains shortly after this shot!!

The following 6 images are intended as a small documentation of the passage of a severe storm over the Elbe Valley in Saxon Switzerland. All shots were taken on 30.08.2012 from the passenger steamer Meissen near the town of Bad Schandau. Here is image 1: While it almost becomes night in the Elbe Valley due to the approaching thunderstorm, massive cloud towers are already swelling over the Czech Republic, still illuminated by the sun at the upper parts.

The Lichtenhainer Waterfall near Bad Schandau, photographed on 23.06.2012. The image shows it in its normal state, shortly before the half-hour show flooding. By the way, this is also the final stop of the popular Kirnitzschtalbahn ! Unfortunately, the final stop is currently out of service due to flood-related construction work, so the tram only runs up to the preceding stop Beuthenfall ! A full reopening of the entire route is expected in autumn 2012.

Autumnal view from the riverbank below the Giebichenstein castle ruins through the Saale valley in Halle downstream to the Trotha dam. On the left is the district of Kröllwitz, on the right are the Klausberge, which represent a porphyry formation as a relic from long-past times of volcanic activity. There are beautiful hiking trails here, offering a magnificent view of the Saale valley and Giebichenstein Castle. Also located here is the Jahn Cave, which the gymnastics pioneer Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852) used around 1800 as a hideout from the authorities; it is accessible via a separate access path and can be visited.
