Oh, that really shows how far the glacier melt has progressed. Twenty years ago, the ice still covered about half the height of the visible lateral moraine. The glacier tongue then still reached the larger visible waterfall (just below the switchback curve beneath the hotel). A hundred years ago, the glacier tongue extended almost down to the valley floor at Gletsch.

Yes, Manfred, the retreat of the glaciers is particularly evident at the Rhône Glacier. In old photos, you can see that the glacier tongue once extended down into the valley. In 1971, I was there as a young student and I still clearly remember that back then the ice extended much further down than it does now.
